The Origin of The Blazer
The blazer can be traced back to the crew of a British naval vessel who needed to look good for Queen Victoria in 1837. To prepare for a formal review, the captain had navy blue jackets with gold buttons made-up to impress the queen. It worked and they looked so good men began to copy their outfits, adding diversity beyond the black tailed suit coats of the day.
What was the name of that famous ship? The HMS Blazer.
In the US, blazers were first worn mostly by the rowing clubs of elite ivy league schools. From there they leapt to the mainstream.
So the blazer’s heritage hails from England and the navy.
The Origin of The Sport Coat
The sport coat was developed around the same time as the blazer, but on land versus sea. It was originally worn as a hunting and riding jacket by upper class gentlemen in the English countryside. It made its way from the field to the pub as a status symbol and point of pride for the sporting gentlemen.
It’s literally athleisure from the 1800s.
Blazers vs. Sport Coats Today
Today, sport coat, sport jacket and blazer have converged to largely be interchangeable. When someone (especially your grandpa) says “grab your sport coat” he isn’t being specific such that a blazer won’t do. It’s just his terminology. Most people consider them to be the same.
But getting more technical, there are differences.
The Simplest Way To Tell Them Apart
To tell a sport coat from a blazer, here’s how to do it:
Sport Coat:
A sport coat is more casual, consistent with its outdoor heritage (think English countryside).
Most sport coats aren't offered with matching pant.
They are known to come in patterns and colors that are beyond what you expect to find in a blazer or suit.
And because they are less formal, they may use rugged or more casual materials (like a heavy wool).
Blazer:
A blazer typically has a more formal vibe (think English Navy).

Which means the suit that comes out of your bag needs to look like a million bucks, with no time for a ridiculous dry cleaning expedition.
Remember how we said a hallmark of a sport coat is that it will never be made into a suit? Well, there is an exception to every rule.
When fashion pushes boundaries, colors and patterns assumed too bold for a suit can shine.
